Orange Country Chiropractors Warn That Driving Can Hurt Your Back

What do 32,000 motorists have in common? Orange County chiropractors say this is the number of people who visit their offices every month and it’s all because of back pain due to bad driving posture.

Indeed, going on a trip may be a relaxing way to kill time but not if you’re driving. People who spend long hours behind the wheel are candidates for back problems.

Orange County chiropractors say the usual victims are mothers who take their kids to school, traveling sales people and cab drivers. These people often drive for hours every day which can spell trouble for their backs. The long time these people spend on the road is unhealthy and a major reason why they have bad backs.

“There is almost twice as much pressure on your back when you are sitting incorrectly than there is if you stand up. Those most at risk are the people who not only spend long periods of time in the car, but also those who make infrequent short journeys in the car – because it can be compared to an unaccustomed form of exercise,” according to Tim Hutchful of the British Chiropractic Association.

Cab drivers suffer because they spend a lot of time driving. Chiropractors in Orange County said this reduces blood flow to the muscles and joints. It certainly won’t ease their pain if you don’t pay them correctly!

Mothers who drive kids to school are at risk too since they often twist on their seats to check on the children and reach into the vehicle to pull their kids and their bags out. This causes a lot of back pressure and that leads to problems later.

Like cab drivers, sales people suffer from restricted movements. They often drive around town in the same position to visit clients and check on their customers. They, too, are candidates for back pain.

Fortunately, Orange County chiropractors said this problem can be prevented by making simple changes in the seating position. For many, the solution lies in adjusting the car seat and in taking regular breaks between driving.

This will reduce the incidence of back pain and will make driving a more pleasant experience. For help with back pain, visit your friendly chiropractor in Orange County.
